Painter IX Creativity:
Digital Artist's Handbook Frequently Asked Questions
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you purchased the book before January 2006 and have had problems loading brushes and art materials, please call Focal Press customer service at 800-545-2522 and ask for an updated Painter Creativity Resource CD. You can tell whether you have the updated Resource CD because it will be called "Painter IX Creativity" when you see it in your computer. The old Resource CD was called "October 23, 2003". Please follow the instructions on the PDF file in the Resource CD for loading the extra brushes and art materials.

Extra Color Sets
Question: "Dear
Jeremy,
I am having so much fun with my new program and your book Painter IX Creativity
that I can hardly be dragged away from the computer. I do, however, have
a problem with the color sets on the CD. After copying them into the Painter
IX folder and trying to access them through the color set drop down menu>open
color set, I can only access > Rebas_lair_wildflowers.pcs, and no other.
I can see the other sets by going to >color set>save color set.
I then dragged the Jeremy folder into the Color Set folder, but it's the
same thing.
Can you help me?
Thank you,
Susannah"
"Jeremy,
Your book arrived today and it's beautiful. I moved your Color Sets to
my color set folder in Painter 9 and the sets were grayed out when I tried
to access them. I moved them to their own folder (in the same line with
standard Color Sets, and they were still grayed out. What am I doing wrong?
My Jeremy brushes "settled in" nicely. Thanks for your help,
Ellie"
Answer: If
you are on PC please make sure you select "All Files" instead
of just "Text Files" when you view the contents of the Jeremy
Xtra Color Sets folder. You will then be able to access all the custom
color sets. Mac users if you add .TXT as the file format ending to all the color set files you should have no problems.
Brush
Resize Shortcut in Windows
Question: "Hi
Jeremy, In your book Painter IX Creativity, page 34 - Key Shorcuts it
says that the command to change the size of the brushes quickly on a Windows
system is Ctrl+Alt+Shift. The correct shortcut is Ctrl+Alt
I have seen on many books this shortcut documented wrong (as Ctrl+Alt+Shift),
even in Painters documentation. Perhaps you will want to let Corel know
about this. I remember sometime ago, I thought that I was doing something
wrong because I couldn't resize my brush with that shorcut, but after
trying serval things, I found that the correct one was Ctrl+Alt.
Regards,
Janet"
Answer: Thank
you, Janet, for pointing this out. You are absolutely correct.

Question: "I
just recently purchased the title Painter IX Creativity and noted that
the included CD does not contain any images for the tutorials in the book.
The back cover states that the CD includes “custom brushes and art
materials not supplied with Corel Painter IX, PLUS tutorial images for
all projects. The only images included on the CD are the >jpg thumbnails
for the various brush categories and variants. Can you advise as to how
to obtain the aforementioned images? Thanks for your time. Great book!
Bob"
Answer: Thank
you for pointing out this error in the back cover text. There are in fact
no tutorial images in the CD. I specifically encourage readers to use
their own imagery. Apologies about that error in the text. I shall pass
that on to the publisher for correction in the next edition.
Tutorial Images
Question: "Where are the tutorial images on the CD for all projects?"
"Jeremy
I have just received my copy of your book and note on the back cover it clearly states "CD ROM includes.....tutorial images". I have no tutorial images on my CD!
Any advice?
Thanks
Glyn"
Answer: The back cover description states in error that tutorial images are included for all projects. In fact tutorial images are not provided. Sincere apologies for this error. I have informed the publisher and they will correct this erroneous information in the next edition. All projects in the book are intended to be followed using your own imagery. The technique instructions are designed to be clear and easily applicable to any image. Tutorial images are included with my Painter IX Simplified for Photographers DVD set, which is an excellent complement to the book.
Check Resample Image
Question: "Hi Jeremy
I just purchased your book Painter IX Creativity. On page 110 there is reference to resampling an image in which you say to uncheck the resample box. Should you mean check the box?
Chris"
Answer: You're absolutely right! Should read check, not uncheck.

What to Buy?
I recommend starting off with my book, Painter X Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook, and introductory DVD, Learning Corel Painter X with Jeremy Sutton. The book is a great complement to all my other materials and also serves as the required text book for all my classes. The book goes deeper and broader than any DVD. It also provides covenient step lists for many of the techniques shared on the DVDs. The Learning Corel Painter X DVD gives you a good overview of the software.
Once you are familiar with the basics then I recommend the more advanced DVD sets, How to Paint from Photographs Using Corel Painter X - Creative Techniques with Jeremy Sutton
and Expanding Your Creativity with Jeremy Sutton - The Art of Collage Portraiture. Both these more advanced DVD sets take you through real-life case studies from beginning to end, sharing along the way my work-flow, organizational systems, creative process, decision-making strategies, techniques and tools, plus including extensive extra brushes, art materials, tutorial images and more. In these two DVD sets I share cross-media techniques that show how I work with different programs and apply traditional media onto my prints.
If you are keen to dive in deeply and work through all my materials then I recommend my Ultimate Collection 2007 which includes all the items mentioned above at a discounted price (roughly equivalent to having the Learning Corel Painter X DVD thrown in for free).
