Why doesn't the Oxford Lecture video work?

You may have an older version of QuickTime. The Oxford Video uses mp4 compression which is for newer versions of QuickTime. You can download the latest version of QuickTime at:

http://www.quicktime.com

All you need is the free player, not the pro version.

I already have JeremyFaves2 extra brushes and earlier art materials loaded on my computer. Do I need to load in the new brushes and art materials and, if so, should I delete the old ones or leave them there?

The new set of extra brushes (JeremyOwnFaves4 and JeremyGuestfaves4) and the new extra art materials and workspaces, supercede all earlier versions. You can safely delete the earlier versions and install the new ones instead. There is no point in keeping JeremyFaves2. Almost all the brushes from that are included in the new categories.

Which Jeremy workspace should I import?

Find out what screen resolution you are using (Mac: Apple Menu > System Preferences > Displays; PC: Start > Control Panels > Video > Properties, or similar). Then select a workspace with the closest resolution to that. Once you have imported a Jeremy workspace adjust your palettes to look tidy and neat on your screen. Save this layout using Window > Arrange Palettes > Save Layout.

I have lost some palettes. How do I get them back and return my palette arrangement to how it was?

You have several choices.

(1) You can go to the Window menu and search for individual palettes. If you see the

word "Show" selecting that item will show the palette on the Painter desktop. If you see the word "Hide" they are already open somewhere. You could then select Hide followed by Show to make them visible.

(2) If you wish to return to the original layout of palettes that appeared when you first imported your current Jeremy workspace, choose Window > Arrange Palettes > JeremyBasic.

(3) If you wish to return to the default layout of palettes that appeared when you first installed Painter, choose Window > Arrange Palettes > Default.

(4) If you wish to return to the default workspace and be able to go back and forth between that and the imported Jeremy workspace, then choose Window > Workspace > Default.

I am having problems opening Painter and it is crashing a lot. How do I return Painter to the factory default settings?

If you are having problems with the extra brushes, or find that Painter freezes, doesn't open or repeatedly crashes, then, after backing up any custom data, hold the Shift key down when opening Painter and choose All Workspaces. Note that this is an extreme solution which will permanently delete all custom data and return Painter to its factory default settings, just as if you had just installed the program for the first time.

What to Buy?

I recommend starting off with my book, Painter X Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook, and introductory DVD, Learning Corel Painter X with Jeremy Sutton. The book is a great complement to all my other materials and also serves as the required text book for all my classes. The book goes deeper and broader than any DVD. It also provides covenient step lists for many of the techniques shared on the DVDs. The Learning Corel Painter X DVD gives you a good overview of the software.

Once you are familiar with the basics then I recommend the more advanced DVD sets, How to Paint from Photographs Using Corel Painter X - Creative Techniques with Jeremy Sutton

and Expanding Your Creativity with Jeremy Sutton - The Art of Collage Portraiture. Both these more advanced DVD sets take you through real-life case studies from beginning to end, sharing along the way my work-flow, organizational systems, creative process, decision-making strategies, techniques and tools, plus including extensive extra brushes, art materials, tutorial images and more. In these two DVD sets I share cross-media techniques that show how I work with different programs and apply traditional media onto my prints.

If you are keen to dive in deeply and work through all my materials then I recommend my Ultimate Collection 2007 which includes all the items mentioned above at a discounted price (roughly equivalent to having the Learning Corel Painter X DVD thrown in for free).

"Wow...all I can say is WOW...double WOW WOW......I couldn't wait to get your book and I figured I could use two of them and boy was I right! (I can already see that one of them will travel with me and be VERY dogeared and marked up!!).
Jeremy...the book is incredibly AWESOME in information, clearness of delivery of the info and the design is beautiful! You even include so much info for us teaching Painter to make us better teachers of the medium.

"I am enjoying my copy of Painter 8 Creativity (I think I was probably the first person in Australia to buy it!). I appreciate the way in which you value the creative process with as much importance as the final article. As a professional teacher / illustrator I wholeheartedly agree with this approach. I encourage my students not to cram formulas but to search for ways to solve each problem as it presents itself. Each section of your book is in itself a springboard into an array of new experimentations.

"Hello Jeremy,
I just bought a copy of Painter 8 Creativity and I am in heaven. As a published author myself I applaud your excellent work! As a reawakening artist I am stirred and deeply inspired. Thank you!
Your book made my day! Maybe the rest of my life, in fact.
Sincerely,
Patricia"
