Tutorial DVDsUpdates & Frequently Asked QuestionsEXPANDING YOUR CREATIVITY WITH JEREMY SUTTONThe Art of Collage PortraitureUpdates & Frequently Asked Questions Can I use this DVD set with any version of Painter? This DVD tutorial set has been created using Corel Painter IX.5. The techniques described can be applied using any version of Painter, though the Painter User Interface you see in the videos has been present in Painter only since version 8. I recommend you use the most recent version of Painter. Check the corel.com web site to check for updates. How does The Art of Collage Portraiture DVD set compare with the Painter IX Simplified for Photographers DVD set, Learning Corel Painter X with Jeremy Sutton DVD, and the Painter IX Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook? The Art of Collage Portraiture is an in-depth case study showing my creative process from beginning to end with a real life collage project. It focuses on collage and includes working within Painter and on the printed canvas. It covers the use of layers in quite some detail. The Painter IX Simplified for Photographers is a more basic introduction to Painter and specifically a variety of techniques for working with photographs and transforming them into paintings. The DVD sets have some overlap with regard to initial set up. Learning Corel Painter X with Jeremy Sutton is a thorough introduction to Corel Painter X. While it includes some overview of photo and collage techniques it is not as in-depth as the Collage DVD set. My book Painter IX Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook covers the basics, photo techniques and collage plus other topics such as scripting, brush customization, etc. All three resources complement each other and are designed to be suitable for all levels of Painter users. I would recommend definitely getting at least the book with either or both DVD sets. When I load in the newer extra brushes from the Art of Collage Portraiture DVD set (JeremyGuestFaves3 and JeremyOwnFaves3) do I need to trash the older JeremyFaves2 brushes? What about the new extra Art Materials? The new extra brush categories, JeremyGuestFaves3 and JeremyOwnFaves3, replace the old Jeremy Faves 2 category (see Extra Brushes). The new categories include ALL of the great brushes from JeremyFaves 2 PLUS 32 new ones! There are now so many that I needed to split the extra brushes into two categories. Replace the older extra brushes and older Art Materials with the newer ones. When I try to load in the newer extra brushes from the Art of Collage Portraiture DVD set (JeremyGuestFaves3 and JeremyOwnFaves3) I am running into problems—EITHER I can't see the new categories at all, OR I see an empty category (no variants showing), OR I get the error message "the category icon must be 30 x 30 pixels", OR I get a repeated error message "you must When you first load the brushes the new categories will appear at the very bottom of the category list. You may need to scroll down to see them. If you wish to bring them higher in the list you will need to choose Window > Workspace > Customize Workspace. Select Brushes > Painter Brushes in the left column and drag the categories in the middle column. If you get error messages about the variants or the category icon go back and make sure you have both the category folders and the category JPGs placed correctly inside the Painter Brushes folder, and double check that the category folders actually contain the variants. The category folder and JPG file location is critical to successfully installing the brushes. If you get the repeated error about needing to capture a brush before it can be built, choose Window > Show Tracker and select Clear All from the Tracker pop-up menu, accessible via the small black triangle in the top right corner of the Tracker palette. (Thanks An-Lon for pointing this out.) There have been some problems with some people on Windows Vista and also using the trial version of Painter X. If you are still having problems email me with an exact description of your operating system and the symptoms. The movies don't seem to play on my Windows XP PC. Make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest version of Quicktime for Windows from the Apple.com web site. It is also worthwhile ensuring you have updated your operating system. The movies play fine on my fast desktop computer but seem to "stutter" and the sound and video get out of synch when I play them on my slower laptop. What can I do to play them on my laptop? You will find that the movies in each DVD come in two resolutions, large (1080 x 810 pixels) and small (864 x 648 pixels). The smaller versions will play fine on your laptop.

What to Buy?I recommend starting off with my book, Painter X Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook, and introductory DVD, Learning Corel Painter X with Jeremy Sutton. The book is a great complement to all my other materials and also serves as the required text book for all my classes. The book goes deeper and broader than any DVD. It also provides covenient step lists for many of the techniques shared on the DVDs. The Learning Corel Painter X DVD gives you a good overview of the software. Once you are familiar with the basics then I recommend the more advanced DVD sets, How to Paint from Photographs Using Corel Painter X - Creative Techniques with Jeremy Sutton and Expanding Your Creativity with Jeremy Sutton - The Art of Collage Portraiture. Both these more advanced DVD sets take you through real-life case studies from beginning to end, sharing along the way my work-flow, organizational systems, creative process, decision-making strategies, techniques and tools, plus including extensive extra brushes, art materials, tutorial images and more. In these two DVD sets I share cross-media techniques that show how I work with different programs and apply traditional media onto my prints. If you are keen to dive in deeply and work through all my materials then I recommend my Ultimate Collection 2007 which includes all the items mentioned above at a discounted price (roughly equivalent to having the Learning Corel Painter X DVD thrown in for free). |
