Expand Your Creative Freedom using Corel Painter X to Transform Your Photographs into Expressive Paintings

Oxford Painter Workshop 2008 - painting away...
What You'll Learn
This seminar is a wonderful opportunity for you to stretch yourself creatively on every level. You will explore ways to transform your photographs into paintings using Corel Painter X. You will learn a combination of technical and artistic skills that will open the doors to you fully expressing yourself on the digital canvas. Whether you are a professional photographer wanting to expand your product range or a fine artist wanting to develop in a new medium or you are simply interested in learning Painter X and loosening up your brush strokes, you will find this seminar a stimulating and educational experience.

Oxford Painter Workshop 2008 - tadaa!
I teach an open-minded, outside the box, approach to transforming your imagery that will stretch your image-making muscles and allow your creativity to flow. I take a thorough methodical approach to building up your knowledge and understanding of Corel Painter X, balancing the sharing of information with hands-on project work where you try out the demonstrated techniques on an image of your own. The project work affords you the time to integrate new information and hone your skills. You will get individual feedback in which I share ideas and insights. Enjoy an unforgettable educational and inspiring experience that will bring you pleasure for years to come.
This an all-levels workshop. I will adapt projects to suit both the more advanced Painter users as well as beginners. The class size will be kept small (ten or less) so that everyone will benefit from individual attention. Places will be reserved on a first-come-first-serve basis so register early to guarantee yourself a place.

Location
The seminar will take place in Pembroke College, Oxford, my alma mater, a beautiful 500 year old college right in the center of Oxford (opposite Christ Church, off St. Aldgates). The painting above is my rendition of the Chapel Quad in the summer sunshine, much how you will enjoy the Quad during class breaks. I am excited to share with you a very special place. Walking into Pembroke College is like walking into another world....
If you're driving allow plenty of time. Sometimes the college has parking spaces available, though this is not gauranteed. The alternative is to park in the Park and Ride or one of the nearby Car Parks. See the Pembroke College web site for directions.
Class Hours
Monday - Thursday, 9 - 12 August, 2010, 9:30am - 5:00pm
Accommodation
The college offers rooms within the college for £75.00 for a single ensuite room and £95.00 for a twin room. These room charges need to be paid in advance as part of your registration (the college charges me directly for all student rooms). Please note the college rooms are basic, not luxurious. They offer the benefit of atmosphere and convenience.
For luxury and comfort I recommend The Old Bank Hotel. This is an excellent hotel, situated just five minutes walk from Pembroke College on the High Street above the first class restaurant Quod. The hotel has August special room rates in the range £145 - £175 (which includes breakfast and parking). I have a few rooms reserved for my students - ask for the Jeremy Sutton Group rooms. To reserve contact the hotel directly at +44 (0)1865 79 95 99.

Which Resources and Materials?
Whatever level of Painter user you are, you will definitely benefit from joining my new online education center www.PaintboxJ.com. In PaintboxJ you will find new video tutorials on Corel Painter 11 added monthly, and much more. The fastest way I can help you with Painter is for you join one of my in-person workshops. In terms of my instructional books and DVDs, I recommend starting off with my book, Painter X Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook, and introductory DVD, Learning Corel Painter X with Jeremy Sutton. The book is a great complement to all my other materials and also serves as the required text book for all my classes. The book goes deeper and broader than any DVD. It also provides convenient step lists for many of the techniques shared on the DVDs. The Learning Corel Painter X DVD gives you a good overview of the software.
Once you are familiar with the basics then I recommend the more advanced DVD sets, How to Paint from Photographs Using Corel Painter X
and Expanding Your Creativity with Jeremy Sutton - The Art of Collage Portraiture. Both these more advanced DVD sets take you through real-life case studies from beginning to end, sharing my work-flow, organizational systems, creative process, decision-making strategies, techniques and tools, plus including extensive extra brushes, art materials, tutorial images and more. In both DVDs I show how I apply physical paint onto my prints.
The interface has not changed significantly between Painter X and Painter 11 so you can easily apply the lessons from all my earlier materials when using Corel Painter 11. Likewise my PaintboxJ Painter 11 tutorials can all be easily applied in earlier versions of Painter. I do strongly recommend upgrading to Painter 11 if you currently have an earlier version. The newest Painter is the best yet. It is significantly faster than earlier versions and includes a whole new class of wonderful brushes (the Hard Media brushes).
