A Great Opportunity to Learn Painter and Portrait Painting

In this exciting and intensive hands-on, bring-your-own-computer, workshop you will learn how to use Corel Painter 8 and apply it to paint portraits. You will learn how to navigate around the interface and choose between all the fabulous brushes to achieve different creative effects. You will learn how to loosen up on the canvas and apply lively, expressive brush strokes that add your own unique artistic styling, flavor, panache and flair to your portraits. This class covers all the basics including:

  • How to set up Painter for optimum creativity.
  • How to choose and control brushes and art materials.
  • How to depict form and character in your portraits.
  • Learn Jeremy's "Muck It Up" Technique!
  • How to work with color and develop your own portrait style.
  • How to use scripting to make movies from your portraits.

Structured Hands-on Learning

Each day includes a review of material, a techniques demonstration, a hands-on project assignment when you try out the demonstrated techniques. You will experience painting portraits from the livemodel as well as from visual reference such as photographs.

Limited Class Size and Extended Classroom Hours

Small class size ensures a high level of personal attention. Extended classroom hours include both early bird morning and night owl evening study sessions. The classroom is accessible to students around the clock, 24 hours per day. Be prepared for total Painter immersion!

Beginner Level

This is a class explains everything from basics. No previous Painter experience is needed. If you are already an experienced Painter user there will still be much on the creative side that will make this a valuable week. If you're looking for a beginner class that focuses purely on transforming photographs then my Painter Panache Intro Class would be ideal. If you are seeking a more advanced Painter class that focuses on transforming photographs, then my Painter Panache Master Series Classes may be just what you're looking for.

Fees and Requirements

The course fee is $595. Early bird fee is $555 if you register by January 1, 2004.

Students are responsible for their own travel, lodgings and meals. The Ramada Plaza offers a special rate of $89/night for workshop participants. Students should bring their own computers, either Mac or Windows, either laptop or desktop, equipped with the latest version of Corel Painter 8 and a tablet (I recommend the Wacom Intuos2 6x8). I highly recommend you have the latest version of your computer operating system, either Mac OS X or Windows 2000 or XP. Your computer should have enough RAM to run the software (128MB RAM minimum recommended), enough hard drive space to save project files generated during the week (12 GB hard drive or larger recommended) and, ideally, a CD writer for backing up your files. The textbook for this class is Jeremy's book Painter 8 Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook.

Besides bringing your computer and files to work on, you are encouraged to bring samples of your own work (digital and non-digital) to share with the class, examples of artistic styles you wish to emulate and inspiring books for the library (just make sure your name is clearly written in the books).

Beautiful Historical Venue

The Ramada Plaza is a beautiful historical hotel located in the center of San Francisco, next to the Civic Center, at 1231 Market Street, between 8th and 9th streets. It survived the 1906 earthquake and became the temporary city hall for a few years following the earthquake. The class takes place in the magnificent Ghiradelli Room. Secure paid parking is available at the hotel for hotel guests or on the other side of 8th Street at the Trinity Apartments for non-guests. The Ramada is conveniently located at the Civic Center BART station.
