A Great Opportunity to Deepen Your Artistry
The Master Series Classes are designed for the experienced Painter user
who is serious about further developing both their artistic and technical
skills in Painter. Although the basis of many class projects is working
from photographs, the principles discussed apply to all art, whether photo-based
or not. This class is aimed at professional creatives from all fields,
including photography, illustration and fine art. The classes are exciting,
intensive, stimulating and challenging. There are two ongoing Master Series
groups, the "Master Series Pino" group that meets in the Spring
(next class March 14 - 18, 2005), and the "Master Series Van Gogh"
group that meets in the Fall (starting October 4 - 8, 2004). Each group
meets once a year in San Francisco. Each year there is a different theme.Between
classes students keep in touch with each other via the Master Forum, an
online community specially created for this purpose.
Shown here is an example of artwork created by Master Series student
Darrell Chitty during a Painter Panache Master Series Class.
Class Themes
The "Explorations in Color" class will be focused on exploring
the use of color in transforming photographs into paintings. You will
explore different ways to approach using color in your paintings. You
will look at the examples of Old Masters, Impressionists, Fauvists and
other art movements and styles and develop your understanding of color.
The"Capturing the Soul" class will look at ways of capturing
the soul of our subjects through use of envisioning, brush stroke, texture,
contrasts, focal points, tone and color. We will look at at the different
brush strokes for backgrounds, clothing anf skin. We will also look at
working into eyes.
The"Seeing the Light - Style & Technique" class will look
at ways artists have captured light and atmosphere through use of different
styles and techniques. We'll explore the Brush Controls and Brush Creator
in depth to come up with brush looks that allow us to fully control our
canvas. We will examine and experience trying out different artists styles.
Structured Hands-on Learning
The classes include technical updates, artistic exercises, a review of
material, class critiques, technique demonstrations, and hands-on project
assignments.
Small Class Size
Small class sizes ensure a high level of personal attention.

Beautiful Historical San Francisco Venues
The Ramada Plaza Hotel (October
4 - 8, 2004) is a beautiful historical hotel located in the center of
San Francisco, next to the Civic Center, at 1231 Market Street, between
8th and 9th streets. It survived the 1906 earthquake and became the temporary
city hall for a few years following the earthquake. The class takes place
in the magnificent Ghiradelli Room. Secure paid parking is available at
the hotel for hotel guests or on the other side of 8th Street at the Trinity
Apartments for non-guests. The Ramada is conveniently located at the Civic
Center BART station.
The Pickwick Hotel (March
14 - 18 and October 17 - 21, 2005) is a lovely historic hotel at 85 Fifth
Street at Mission, just 3 blocks from Union Square and 2 blocks from the
SFMOMA. The hotel was featured in Dashiell Hammett's "The Maltese
Falcon". It was built in 1926 with neo-gothic architecture. The rooms
are spectacular-they all have beautiful french provisional decor and are
equipped with desk (with T1 high speed internet), comfy overstuffed arm
chair, armoire, 2 phones with free local calls, cable TV, in-room fridge
and in-room robe. We'll be in the Merlin Room, very appropriately named
for the magic you'll be creating on your digital canvas!
Fees, Requirements & Registration
The course fee is $795. To register, complete and send in the Registration
Form.
Students are responsible for their own travel, lodgings and meals. Students
should bring their own computers, either Mac or Windows, either laptop
or desktop, equipped with the latest version of Corel Painter and a tablet
(I recommend the Wacom Intuos2 6x8). I highly recommend you have the latest
version of your computer operating system, either Mac OS X or Windows
2000 or XP. Your computer should have enough RAM to run the software (128MB
RAM minimum recommended), enough hard drive space to save project files
generated during the week (12 GB hard drive or larger recommended - new
high capacity external hard drives are excellent) and, ideally, a CD writer
for backing up your files. The classroom is kept secure at all all times.
Besides bringing your computer and files to work on, you are encouraged
to bring samples of your own work (digital and non-digital) to share with
the class and inspiring books for the library (just make sure your name
is clearly written in the books).
