A Great Opportunity to Deepen Your Artistry

The Master Series Classes are designed for the experienced Painter user who is serious about further developing both their artistic and technical skills in Painter. Although the basis of many class projects is working from photographs, the principles discussed apply to all art, whether photo-based or not. This class is aimed at professional creatives from all fields, including photography, illustration and fine art. The classes are exciting, intensive, stimulating and challenging. Enjoy an unforgettable educational and inspiring experience that will bring you pleasure for years to come. The classes are part of an on-going program. Between classes students keep in touch with each other via the Master Forum, an online community specially created for this purpose.

The picture shown above is a detail from Jeremy's Moment in Time.

Class Themes

At the Master level each class involves some structured tutiion as well as time working with students on an individual level, helping them achieve their specific Painter-related goals. The themes provide a framework from which to structure the classes whilst still allowing each class to be adapted to the students needs and interests.

The "Going for it with Color!" class is a good starting point for those joining the master program for the first time, or for those who feel they'd like to immerse themselves in color and go beyond the color in their photographs. It is a week of working with, and understanding, the role of color in your imagery.

You'll start off gathering some suitably colorful source imagery to work on, using local San Francisco scenes, and learn how to prepare your source imagery for optimum effect in Painter. You will then explore different approaches to handling, choosing, combining, applying and juxtaposing color in your imagery, creating color variations based on common images. You'll experience painting with more limited color palettes and with wilder color palettes, learning about working with the percieved tonal value of colors. Jeremy will demonstrate how he uses color in his portraits, and have you try out different ideas for working with colorful "muck ups", in shadows and highlights and with adding color accents.

One student who took this class, Linda Huddle Martin of Lancaster, PA, subsequently wrote to me:

"Hi Jeremy,

Just wanted to let you know that since our class this year, every Painter image I have sold, and it has been about 12, I have done 2 versions, one the way I was doing them last year and one with more color added. In every single case my client has chosen the one with more color in them. I would never have predicted that.

Regards,

Linda Huddle Martin"

The "Exploring Styles, Textures & Techniques" class will look at developing your artistry and style through learning from other artists, mixing media, and through enhancing and building on your digital painting with analog paint. You'll start the week off with an on-location photo shoot to provide images to work on, and then learn image preparation techniques for making the most of your images as source reference for paintings. You'll look at image composition techniques and issues, and how to approach your Painter work with specific artistic styles that suit your imagery, whether impressionist, expressionist, realist, classical, fauvist, etc. You'll experiment with basic textural and collage layer techniques and effects. Finally you'll get to paint on your print and explore adding non-digital texture and color to complete your artwork.

This will be an opportunity to stretch yourself in new directions, and further develope your mastery of the medium.

Photo Shoot in Beautiful San Francisco Mansion

Master Classes will include a photo shoot at Chenery House, the beautiful San Francisco mansion of Robert Pritikin which features a phenomenal collection of art and a spectacular sculpture garden. Besides the Chenery House shoot, you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy other "only in San Francisco" photo shoots, such as a Golden Gate Bridge view, the cityscape from Treasure Island, the Palace of Fine Arts or a cable car. Students are encouraged to visit local art galleries and museums for artistic inspiration and ideas. There are many galleries within a few minutes walk of the Hotel Rex.

Level: Intermediate to Advanced

The Master Classes are aimed at people who are already familiar with Painter and are using it as a regular part of their creative work. A requirement for this class is to have completed an earlier class with Jeremy or by portfolio review by Jeremy. You should also have worked through Jeremy's DVD set Painter IX Simplified for Photographers and have his book Painter IX Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook. If you are interested in taking a Master class and you haven't studied with jeremy before, please email Jeremy some sample Painter images or a reference to a web site where he can view your Painter work.

What To Bring

Students should bring their own computers, either Mac or Windows, either laptop or desktop, equipped with the latest version of Corel Painter and a tablet (I recommend the Wacom Intuos2 6x8). I highly recommend you have the latest version of your computer operating system, either Mac OS X or Windows 2000 or XP. Your computer should have enough RAM to run the software (128MB RAM minimum recommended), enough hard drive space to save project files generated during the week (12 GB hard drive or larger recommended - new high capacity external hard drives are excellent) and, ideally, a CD writer for backing up your files. The classroom is kept secure at all all times. Even though you'll be taking photos as part of this training, bring some images you may wish to work on.

You are encouraged to bring samples of your own work (digital and non-digital) to share with the class and inspiring books for the library (just make sure your name is clearly written in the books).

Class Hours

Instruction hours 9am - 5pm, Monday - Thursday

Arrangements will be made for students who wish to have after-hours access to the classroom. If you are flying in it is highly recommended that you also include at least one full weekend to enjoy the beautiful city of San Francisco and it's surroundings.

The interface has not changed significantly between Painter X and Painter 11 so you can easily apply the lessons from all my earlier materials when using Corel Painter 11. Likewise my PaintboxJ Painter 11 tutorials can all be easily applied in earlier versions of Painter. I do strongly recommend upgrading to Painter 11 if you currently have an earlier version. The newest Painter is the best yet. It is significantly faster than earlier versions and includes a whole new class of wonderful brushes (the Hard Media brushes).

PPA members will earn one merit for attending this course.
