The class covers all the basics including:
This hands-on class is the ideal way to get to grips with Painter and learn the art of transforming your photographs into paintings. London Apple Store "Made on a Mac" Presentation, Thursday, 22 June, 2006, 7pm - 9pmWhether you are attending the Painter class or not, come by and enjoy Jeremy's Made on a Mac presentation at the London, Regent Street, Apple Store on Thursday, 16 June 7 - 9pm. Jeremy will share the way he uses Painter in his artwork, and include a live portrait painting demonstration. This will be both entertaining and educational.
Structured Hands-on LearningInstruction includes technique demonstrations, hands-on projects where you try out the demonstrated techniques on an image of your own, and a review of students artwork in which Jeremy gives individual feedback and shares ideas and insights. Individual Attention—Small Class SizeSmall class size ensures a high level of personal attention. FeeIntroductory 2 days ONLY, June 26 - 27, 2006 Class Fee: $750 (approximately £380) These fees do not include Jeremy's new 5-DVD set, Painter IX Simplified for Photographers, Natural Media Painting DVD (Digital Innovator Volume 4) and his new book, Painter IX Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook, which are required for this class. You can purchase these items at the time of registering (see Registration Form for details) and Jeremy will bring them along to class for you. Students are responsible for their own travel, lodgings and meals. What to Bring and PrepareBring your own computer, either Mac or Windows, laptop or desktop, equipped with Corel Painter IX and a Wacom tablet (Jeremy recommends the Wacom Intuos3 6x8, 6 x 11 or Cintiq 21SX). For optimum operation your computer should have the latest version of your computer operating system, either Mac OS X or Windows XP, as much RAM as you can afford and fit into your computer (at least 500 MB recommended), enough free hard drive space to save project files generated during the week (at least 12 GB free hard drive space recommended) and a CD/DVD writer for backing up your files. Please ensure you have installed all software and test run Painter and your tablet prior to class. Bring with you at least ten varied images to work on, some landscapes/cityscapes, some full figure portraits and some close up faces. First prepare these images in Photoshop, cropping them and adjusting levels and hue/sat as you see fit. Source images for paintings tend to work better when slightly more saturated and contrasty than you may have for a regular image. Save a flattened version of each image, with a meaningful name, as an RGB TIFF file in a folder for source images. Keep the images at the resolution they came out of your camera. You can always resize them later if needed. Please bring samples of your own work (digital and non-digital) and marketing materials to share with the class, examples of artistic styles you wish to emulate and inspiring books (make sure your name is clearly written in your books). Class HoursClass hours are 10am - 5pm each day. VenueSu Kaye Photography Studio

Which Resources and Materials?Whatever level of Painter user you are, you will definitely benefit from joining my new online education center www.PaintboxJ.com. In PaintboxJ you will find new video tutorials on Corel Painter 11 added monthly, and much more. The fastest way I can help you with Painter is for you join one of my in-person workshops. In terms of my instructional books and DVDs, I recommend starting off with my book, Painter X Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook, and introductory DVD, Learning Corel Painter X with Jeremy Sutton. The book is a great complement to all my other materials and also serves as the required text book for all my classes. The book goes deeper and broader than any DVD. It also provides convenient step lists for many of the techniques shared on the DVDs. The Learning Corel Painter X DVD gives you a good overview of the software.
Once you are familiar with the basics then I recommend the more advanced DVD sets, How to Paint from Photographs Using Corel Painter X and Expanding Your Creativity with Jeremy Sutton - The Art of Collage Portraiture. Both these more advanced DVD sets take you through real-life case studies from beginning to end, sharing my work-flow, organizational systems, creative process, decision-making strategies, techniques and tools, plus including extensive extra brushes, art materials, tutorial images and more. In both DVDs I show how I apply physical paint onto my prints.
The interface has not changed significantly between Painter X and Painter 11 so you can easily apply the lessons from all my earlier materials when using Corel Painter 11. Likewise my PaintboxJ Painter 11 tutorials can all be easily applied in earlier versions of Painter. I do strongly recommend upgrading to Painter 11 if you currently have an earlier version. The newest Painter is the best yet. It is significantly faster than earlier versions and includes a whole new class of wonderful brushes (the Hard Media brushes).
