This class covers all the basics including:
This hands-on immersion course is the ideal way to get to grips with Painter and learn the art of transforming your photographs into paintings. There is no substitute for an in-person hands-on class. Structured Hands-on LearningInstruction includes technique demonstrations, hands-on projects where you try out the demonstrated techniques on an image of your own, and a review of students artwork in which Jeremy gives individual feedback and shares ideas and insights. Limited Class SizeSmall class size (twelve or less) ensures a high level of personal attention. Beginner to Intermediate LevelThese classes are aimed at beginner to intermediate level. Although no previous Painter experience is needed, if you are familiar with Painter and have been using it for a number of years, you will still get a lot out of these classes. Much of what is taught goes far beyond just how to use Painter. You will learn efficient workflow practices and how to apply artistic prinicples that make your images sing and light up. The Painter Panache Master Series Classes are aimed for students who have already been through the Intro level class. In the Master Series Classes, students develop a deeper mastery and understanding of Painter's capabilities whilst expanding their artistry, developing their own style and finding their expressive voice. Fee$995 Click here for the Registration Form. This fee includes a class workbook. It does not include Jeremy's DVD set, Painter IX Simplified for Photographers, (supplied with the Digital Innovator Volume 4Natural Media Painting DVD) and his current book, Painter IX Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook. You can order these items at the time of registering for the class if you wish. It is recommended you work through the DVDs prior to class. Bring the book with you to class since you will be using brushes installed from the Companion Resource CD that accompanies the book. Students are responsible for their own travel, lodgings and meals. Note that the class fee may be subject to change until your registration is received. Your registration is needed to guarantee a place in the class. What to Bring and PrepareBring your own computer, either Mac or Windows, laptop or desktop, equipped with Corel Painter IX.5 and a Wacom tablet (Jeremy recommends the Wacom Intuos3 6 x 8 or 6 x 11 which you can order through CoolGraphicStuff using coupon code jeremy for best price). For optimum operation your computer should have the latest version of your computer operating system, either Mac OS X or Windows XP, as much RAM as you can afford and fit into your computer (at least 500 MB recommended), enough free hard drive space to save project files generated during the week (at least 12 GB free hard drive space recommended) and a CD/DVD writer for backing up your files. Please ensure you have installed all software and test run Painter and your tablet prior to class. Bring with you at least ten varied images to work on, some landscapes/cityscapes, some full figure portraits and some close up faces. First prepare these images in Photoshop, cropping them and adjusting levels and hue/sat as you see fit. Source images for paintings tend to work better when slightly more saturated and contrasty than you may have for a regular image. Save a flattened version of each image, with a meaningful name, as an RGB TIFF file in a folder for source images. Keep the images at the resolution they came out of your camera. You can always resize them later if needed. Make a folder in your computer for saving all your class projects. Name the folder with a name such as "PanacheIntro-Feb06". Please bring with you to class on the first day my book, "Painter IX Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook". We'll be loading in extra brushes and art materials from the resource CD that comes with the book. If you don't have a copy then there will be copies for sale. Please bring samples of your own work (digital and non-digital) and marketing materials to share with the class, examples of artistic styles you wish to emulate and inspiring books (make sure your name is clearly written in your books). VenueSutton Studios & GalleryNestled in the heart of San Francisco's vibrant historic Mission District amidst a community of artists, architects, film makers and vintners, Sutton Studios & Gallery is a beautiful 1,200 square foot facility with 13' ceilings, 10' wide projection screen, refreshment area, library corner and exhibition space. It is adjacent to excellent cafes and restaurants, is ten to fifteen minutes from the city center and is easily accessed by public transport (make use of the 511 Trip Planner). Sutton Studios & Gallery
The Studio is on the third floor of an industrial style building. There is a freight elevator if needed. Please call the Studio at 415-641-1221 for assistance with the elevator if you need to use it. All facilities are wheel chair accessible. Unfortunately parking is not so easy in the mornings. You should allow an extra ten minutes on your travel time to find street parking. There is paid parking about four blocks away at 17th Street and Folsom Street (bounded by Shotwell Street). Do not leave any valuables or bags on show in your car (a recommended precaution where ever you park in San Francisco). Recommended Place to StayThe Pickwick HotelThe Pickwick Hotel, a lovely historic hotel, with clean comfortable rooms (special rate for Jeremy's Painter workshop students, $89 for February, $129 for October - follow the instructions below to take advantage of these rates), five minutes walk from Union Square and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The rooms are on the small side since it's an old hotel. Ask for a large quiet room on upper floors when you check in. Here's the address: The Pickwick Hotel 85 Fifth Street (cross street is Mission) 415.421.7500 phone IMPORTANT: Please note that to get the special room rate you need to call in directly to 415-421-7500 extension 1022, Monday-Friday 8am - 4pm Pacific Standard Time and ask to speak with Rowena. She'll be happy to assist. The special discounted rate is NOT available, or applicable retroactively, if you use the 800 after hours number, or if you use a hotel reservations company (such as hotels.com, expedia.com etc.) See hotel web site for map and directions. To get from the hotel to Sutton Studios & Gallery, is very simple: a short 15 - 18 minute bus ride (Muni bus number #27 "Chavez and Mission" on headsign at front of bus, from Fifth Street at the corner with Mission, opposite hotel, get off at the Bryant St. and Mariposa St. stop) or a ten minute cab ride. Class HoursTeaching hours are 10am - 5pm. Students will be able to have access to the classroom outside of regular class hours. It is recommended that you aim to arrive at the Studio at least 15 minutes before the start of class to give yourself time to set up and relax. This is particularly important on the first day. Jeremy be will be on site at the studio prior to class to help with questions and give advice on assignment work. When you get to the Studio building, 1890 Bryant, ring the doorbell for Sutton Studios and Gallery. We will buzz you in. Come up to the third floor. We are at the end of the corrdor on the left. If you are flying it is recommended that you include at least one full weekend to enjoy the beautiful city of San Francisco and it's surroundings!
Eating OutSan Francisco is a "foodie" city. You'll be spoilt for choice at all ends of the spectrum. A useful guide to restaurants is found at SFGate.com. Some of my personal favorites that are within ten minutes walk of the Pickwick are:
If you are flying it is recommended that you arrive on the Sunday and stay until the following Saturday. Naturally it is highly recommended that you also include at least one full weekend to enjoy the beautiful city of San Francisco and it's surroundings.
