Tangoed Up in Paint!
From capture to completion: learn how to make beautiful paintings of dancers.
Sutton Studios & Gallery, San Francisco
March 10 - 12, 2011

Moment in Time
Syllabus
Thursday
CAPTURE THE MAGIC MOMENT
Photo shoot with live dancers in the studio performing Argentine Tango. This will be an exciting and unique photo shoot! Capture the beauty and passion of tango. Topics covered will include:
- View-point (location, angle and elevation),
- Environment design (backdrop, props and surfaces),
- Lighting (sources, locations, intensity and angles),
- Composition (zooms, frame and crop),
- Focus (depth of field, choice of focus, center of attention)
- Motion (shutter speed, dynamic effects in camera),
- ISO settings (lighting conditions, grain and motion)
- Capturing the magic moments within the dance - how to predict and prepare for them by listening to the music. Timing is everything when capturing dancers and musicians in action.
FROM CAMERA TO COMPUTER
Using a combination of Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter and, as appropriate, other software, you will view and sort your images into Primary and Secondary Faves, choose and prepare (with hue, saturation, color, levels and crop adjusments, as needed) your source image for painting. Carefully observe your chosen image. Visualize the story you want to tell in your painting and set your vision and direction for your creative journey.
FROM PREP TO PAINT
Introduction to working with Corel Painter 11 and the Wacom tablet. This introduction will be adapted to suit the level of students in the class. You will learn how to start a painting based on your photograph, working onto your digital canvas with rapid, bold, loose, expressive brushwork, creating a "Muck Up" which captures the essence of your subject and will serve as a "Foundational Underpainting" onto which you will build up and further develop and resolve your painting.
Friday
REFINE, ENRICH & RESOLVE
Based on frequent close observation and comparison of your source image and your painting, resolve areas that need attention. With focused intentionality, refine and enrich your painting using selective detail, strong values, clear contrasts and a wide variety of marks.
EXPAND YOUR COLOR / TONE ZONE
Explore the relationship between color and tone. Expand the range and variety of colors you use in your painting while preserving tonal contrasts. Add life and vibrancy to your painting by adding color that isn't in your source image. Make use of complementary colors to add dynamism, control contrasts and adjust saturation.
Saturday
FROM COMPUTER TO CANVAS
Prepare your image for printing. Print onto canvas with colors that closely match what you see on your computer screen.
POST-PRINT PAINT PREP: FIXING & GELLING
Prepare your canvas print by first fixing it and then gelling it.
POST-PRINT PAINTING
Color palette layout. Apply acrylic paint to your gelled canvas. Learn painting knife and brush techniques.
