  What You'll Learn

This hands-on, bring-your-own-computer, workshop introduces you to a world of unparalleled creative freedom. You will be empowered both technically and creatively. You will explore ways to transform your photographs into paintings using a powerful combination of state-of-the-art digital painting tools with physical paint media applied to your digital print. You will learn technical and artistic skills that will open the doors to you fully expressing yourself on the digital and physical canvas.

The small class size, typically eight or less, ensures every student receives individual one-on-one attention. All my workshops offer an unparalleled “gourmet” educational experience!

Each day has a specific theme that is taught through a combination of instructor demonstrations and hands-on exercises and project work where each student practices and applies the principles and techniques demonstrated. Technical topics covered include learning an expressive work flow for working from photos; effective file naming and project folder organization; tool optimization; and how to make, save and apply your own custom brushes and papers. Art principles and techniques covered in  this workshop include commitment to creative process; the importance of tonal relationships in conveying form; selectively refining and resolving your painting through selective detail and contrasts; and enlivening your imagery through bold but effective use of color that goes beyond clone color. This is the perfect class for you if you wish to loosen up your brush strokes, expand your use of color and break out of the box!

Besides working on the mastery of digital painting, you'll also get to experience applying an acrylic gel onto your canvas print and then learn painting knife and brush techniques, including impasto, scumbling and glazing.

I teach a methodical, well-structured and yet open-minded and improvisational approach to transforming your digital photographs that will stretch your image-making muscles and allow your creativity to flow. I am an enthusiastic, patient, encouraging and supportive teacher. I believe in building solid foundations and teaching from the ground up. This seminar is a wonderful opportunity for you to stretch yourself creatively on every level.

  Post-Print Painting

The first four days of the workshop are focused exclusively on sharpening your digital painting skills and mastery of the Corel Painter 12 brushes. On the final day you'll roll up your sleeves and get painting with acrylic paints on your canvas print.

  Who These Seminars Are For

This workshop is for anyone who is looking for a fresh creative approach to using Corel Painter 12 and working with their photographs. The class provides you with a solid foundation from which to grow and develop. The small class size makes it suitable for all levels.

You do not need to have any formal art training or art background, or know how to paint or draw, to take this workshop. I include artistic advice and instruction throughout the workshop. Naturally if you do have art training and experience that will reflect in how you use the tools and what you create. I encourage all my students to take traditional drawing classes since this helps train your eye as an artist and empowers you in every aspect of image making. However such training is not required. No matter what your background, in this class you will enjoy an unforgettable educational and inspiring experience that will bring you pleasure for years to come.

Preparation

Students are expected to have a minimum basic knowledge of how to use their computer and do basic tasks such as finding their way around the folders, copying files and opening applications. Each student is expected to prepare for class by ensuring that the latest version of Corel Painter 12 is installed and working, that they have the latest Wacom driver installed and have programmed their tablet Express Keys as per instructions on PaintboxTV, and that they have successfully imported the extra Painter goodies (custom workspace etc) from PaintboxTV. This preparation is important and will save considerable time in class and allow more time devoted to painting.

It is also recommended that students take time to work through some of the tutorial videos on the PaintboxTV Painter Master Class series. This will help you absorb information faster, and help you get more out of the class.
