What You'll Learn

This hands-on, bring-your-own-computer, seminar introduces you to a world of unparalleled creative freedom. You will be empowered both technically and creatively. You will explore ways to transform your photographs into paintings using state-of-the-art digital painting tools. You will learn a combination of technical and artistic skills that will open the doors to you fully expressing yourself on the digital canvas.

Each day has a specific theme that is addressed through a combination of demonstrations by myself, and hands-on exercises and project work where each student creates paintings from their own source photographs, and practices the principles and techniques demonstrated. Topics covered include Wacom tablet and Corel Painter set up, work flow, organization and optimization; loosening up and expanding the variety of your brush strokes; prepping your photographs for painting; how to make, save and apply your own custom papers; commitment to creative process: the importance of tonal relationships in conveying form; selectively refining and resolving your your painting through selective detail and contrasts; and enlivening your imagery through bold but effective use of color. You will be simultaneously challenged and supported. This is the perfect class for someone who is itching to "break out of the box!"

I teach an open-minded, improvisational, outside the box, approach to transforming your digital photographs that will stretch your image-making muscles and allow your creativity to flow. I am an enthusiastic, patient, encouraging and supportive teacher. I believe in building solid foundations and teaching from the ground up. This seminar is a wonderful opportunity for you to stretch yourself creatively on every level. I take a thorough methodical approach to building up your knowledge and understanding of Corel Painter 11, balancing the technical with the artistic. The project work affords you the time to integrate new information and hone your skills. The small class size, limited to no more than twelve students maximum, ensures every student receives individual one-on-one attention.

Post-Print Painting

Given the great interest in learning post-print painting techniques I wish to clarify what is and isn't covered in this class. The Painter Creativity Seminar is focused on mastering the art of creating beautiful expressive paintings based on photographic reference. In the Painter Creativity Seminar you will learn the core skillset needed prior to any post-print painting. I always recommend spending a little extra effort in getting a great painting within Corel Painter before going to print and adding tradtional paint. The Painter Creativity Seminar is a stepping stone and pre-requisite to taking the Post-Print Painting Workshop, a workshop which is dedicated to an in-depth training in working with traditional paints on your canvas prints. This Painter Creativity Seminar also serves as a foundation pre-requisite for my other Master level classes: The Art of Collage Portraiture and The Great Gatsby Impressionist Workshop.

Who These Seminars Are For

The Painter Creativity Seminar is an introductory class suitable for those new to Painter and digital painting, as well as for those with Painter experience who are looking for a fresh creative approach to using the program and working with their photographs, or a review of the ‘Jeremy’ approach to painting from photographs. The class provides you with a solid foundation from which to grow and develop.

Students are expected to have a minimum basic knowledge of how to use their computer and do basic tasks such as finding their way around the folders, copying files from a CD onto their hard drive, and opening applications. No prior Painter experience is needed, though it will help you absorb information faster, and thus you'll get more out of the class, if you have reviewed my DVD "How to Paint from Photographs Using Corel Painter X" and explored Painter at least a little.

You do not need to have any formal art training or art background to take this class. You do need to know how to paint or draw. Natually if you do have art training and experience that will reflect in how you visualize your paintings, use the tools and what you create. I encourage all my students to take traditional drawing classes since this helps train your eye as an artist and empowers you in every aspect of image making. However such training is not required to take this class. No matter what your background, in this class you will enjoy an unforgettable educational and inspiring experience that will bring you pleasure for years to come.

The Painter Creativity Seminar tuition fee is $1,200, which includes the Seminar Notes. The interface has not changed significantly between Painter X and Painter 11 so you can easily apply the lessons from all my earlier materials when using Corel Painter 11. Likewise my PaintboxJ Painter 11 tutorials can all be easily applied in earlier versions of Painter. I do strongly recommend upgrading to Painter 11 if you currently have an earlier version. The newest Painter is the best yet. It is significantly faster than earlier versions and includes a whole new class of wonderful brushes (the Hard Media brushes).

PPA members will earn one merit for attending the san Francisco courses.

"Jeremy:
Thanks for letting me preview your latest and greatest Painter IX DVDs.  Having taken you classes in the past I mistakenly thought that the DVDs would be a review.  Much more than being a review, the DVDs are the perfect complement to your classes.  I have been able to re-discover techniques and tips that you went over briefly in your class and have found new ways to apply them. I cannot imagine how much time and effort went into distilling all you teachings into these 4 DVDs. The Painter IX DVD’s should be required viewing for all your students.  The more I watch them, the more I learn.

Thanks again.
John"

"I attended Jeremy Sutton's Painter Panache Intro Class 7-11 Feb 05. My objective for attending the class was to learn both technical and creativity skills which would take me a level beyond my present skills. I recently retired from the U.S. Army which gave me an opportunity to travel and photograph various people and their cultures. I consider myself an advanced amateur photographer and have had my work published in numerous calendars but was not satisfied with my creativity. I wanted to be able to take my existing images and make them works of art which I am delighted to say, Jeremy taught me to do in the class. I have attended other photography workshops in the past but I can honestly say that Jeremy is by far the best instructor. The difference is, he gives personal attention to each student during the duration of the entire course. He is a master digital artist and shares his techniques with his students. After returning from the course, I rolled up my sleeves and have worked on and completed exhibition quality images which I am going to sell in art galleries, calendars, and posters. I would also like to say besides learning the ins and outs of Painter IX, I also gained a lot of insight into myself and my abilities during the duration of the course when we made and critiqued images. If you are planning on taking the Intro Course, I recommend you first purchase Jeremy's most recent training DVD's, Painter IX Simplified and study those prior to attending the class. I worked with my set for approximately two weeks before the class and as a result, obtained so much more information because of my familiarity with the techniques. If you can't attend the class, I recommend you purchase the DVD's and use them to learn Jeremy's painterly techniques. If you are serious about becoming a digital artist, Jeremy is the master instructor!
Regards,
Lowell"
