Island What You'll LearnThis hands-on, bring-your-own-computer, workshop introduces you to a world of unparalleled creative freedom. You will be empowered both technically and creatively. You will explore ways to transform your photographs into paintings using a powerful combination of state-of-the-art digital painting tools with physical paint media applied to your digital print. You will learn technical and artistic skills that will open the doors to you fully expressing yourself on the digital and physical canvas. Each day has a specific theme that is taught through demonstrations and hands-on exercises and project work where each student creates paintings from their own source photographs, and practices the principles and techniques demonstrated. Topics covered include Wacom tablet and Corel Painter set up, an expressive work flow for working from photos, organization and optimization; prepping your photographs for painting; how to make, save and apply your own custom brushes and papers; commitment to creative process; the importance of tonal relationships in conveying form; selectively refining and resolving your painting through selective detail and contrasts; and enlivening your imagery through bold but effective use of color that goes beyond clone color. This is the perfect class for you if you wish to loosen up your brush strokes, expand your use of color and break out of the box! I teach a methodical, well-structured and yet open-minded and improvisational approach to transforming your digital photographs that will stretch your image-making muscles and allow your creativity to flow. I am an enthusiastic, patient, encouraging and supportive teacher. I believe in building solid foundations and teaching from the ground up. This seminar is a wonderful opportunity for you to stretch yourself creatively on every level. The small class size ensures every student receives individual one-on-one attention. Here's what former students have said: Transformational. A very clearly developed course that creates an easy pathway to a new way of thinking as a photographic Artist. An incredible experience! Who These Seminars Are ForThis workshop is for anyone who is looking for a fresh creative approach to using the program and working with their photographs. The class provides you with a solid foundation from which to grow and develop. The small class size makes it suitable for all levels. Students are expected to have a minimum basic knowledge of how to use their computer and do basic tasks such as finding their way around the folders, copying files from a CD onto their hard drive, and opening applications. Though no prior Painter experience is needed, it will help you absorb information faster, and thus you'll get more out of the class. You do not need to have any formal art training or art background to take this class. You do need to know how to paint or draw. Naturally if you do have art training and experience that will reflect in how you use the tools and what you create. I encourage all my students to take traditional drawing classes since this helps train your eye as an artist and empowers you in every aspect of image making. However such training is not required to take this class. No matter what your background, in this class you will enjoy an unforgettable educational and inspiring experience that will bring you pleasure for years to come. FeeThe Painter Creativity Plus Post-Print Paint Workshop tuition fee is $1,500, which includes the Workshop Binder, a 20" x 24" practice print on canvas and the physical art materials used in post-print painting. The book, Painter 11 Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook, is a required text for this class (not included in the fee). The DVD How to Paint from Photographs Using Corel Painter X: Creative Techniques with Jeremy Sutton is highly recommended, along with membership of PaintboxJ. These resources will provide you with all the necessary preparation and review instructions, plus the extra brushes and custom art materials, etc, that will make so much difference to your Painter experience. Refreshments and snacks will be available in the classroom. Meals, travel and accomodation are at the students own cost and are not included in the class fee. Class Hours & Travel PlansThe workshop hours are 9 am - 5 pm. For the August workshop there will be an optional, but highly recommended, art field trip will be on Sunday afternoon, August 8th, meeting in the de Young Museum cafeteria at 2:15PM. The de Young Museum is in the heart of Golden Gate Park. Please make your own way to the museum. I shall have a van to transport you from there to the Legion of Honor and can drop you back at your hotel afterwards. We will visit two wonderful exhibitions: Birth of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Museé d’Orsay at the de Young Museum followed by the Impressionist Paris: City of Light at the Legion of Honor (from which you will enjoy a magnificent view of the Golden Gate Bridge). If you are flying in from out of state I recommend getting in on the Saturday, August 7th, so you can enjoy the Sunday art field trip. If you are flying out on the last evening, please book a flight departure no earlier than 7:30 pm from SFO or 8 pm from Oakland. Please review the What to Bring page before attending class so that you are fully prepared and can make the most from the week. Online Training New Book! with Jeremy Sutton:
The interface has not changed significantly between Painter X and Painter 11 so you can easily apply the lessons from all my earlier materials when using Corel Painter 11. Likewise my PaintboxJ Painter 11 tutorials can all be easily applied in earlier versions of Painter. I do strongly recommend upgrading to Painter 11 if you currently have an earlier version. The newest Painter is the best yet. It is significantly faster than earlier versions and includes a whole new class of wonderful brushes (the Hard Media brushes).
