A Great Opportunity to Develop Technically and Artistically, Discover Solutions, Master Techniques and Complete Projects

Enjoy an intensive, hands-on, bring-your-own-computer seminar. This four day course allows flexibility and individual learning. Enjoy a live daily technique demonstration by Jeremy, in which Jeremy works on a real life project, showing how he takes it from beginning to completion. This is followed by seminar project time in which students work on projects of their choice. During the project time Jeremy comes round and helps everyone on an individual basis.

Jeremy's morning demonstrations will be themed loosely as follows (subject to adjustment according to the needs and interests of the students):

  • Day 1: Basics recap (how Jeremy customizes his tablet and Painter) followed by painterly transformation of a photograph using the "muck up" technique.
  • Day 2: Paper texture demonstration, showing how Jeremy customizes and applies paper texture as he paints.
  • Day 3: Overview of collage, showing how Jeremy combines cloning, textures and layering techniques.
  • Day 4: Live portrait demonstration, showing how Jeremy approaches capturing a subject, using color and tone to sculpt form and evoke feeling.

Who This Seminar is Suitable For

This seminar is suitable for all levels, beginner to advanced. The seminar-style instruction is ideal for someone who is a highly motivated self-starter and who has a passion and vision of where they want to go and/or has very specific project needs they are wanting to resolve. You will be in a class with other students may be working on different projects and with different interests. Much of what is taught goes far beyond just how to use Painter. You will learn efficient workflow practices and how to apply artistic prinicples that make your images sing and light up.

If you are looking for a more structured learning enviroment and wish to focus specifically on transforming photographs then one of the Painter Panache Intro Classes will be ideal. If you are an experienced Painter user and wish to deepen your mastery of Painter with a more structured class then one of the Painter Panache Master Classes will be ideal. In the Master Series Classes, students develop a deeper mastery and understanding of Painter's capabilities whilst expanding their artistry, developing their own style and finding their expressive voice.

Limited Class Size

The seminar is limited to eight students to ensure a high level of personal attention.

Recommended resources for this seminar are Jeremy's new DVD set, Painter IX Simplified for Photographers, (supplied with the Digital Innovator Volume 4 Natural Media Painting DVD) and his book, Painter IX Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook. You can order these items at the time of registering for the class if you wish. It is recommended you work through the DVDs prior to class and bring the book with you to class so hyou can use the extra brushes from the Companion Resource CD that accompanies the book. Students are responsible for their own travel, lodgings and meals.

What to Bring and Prepare

Bring your own computer, either Mac or Windows, laptop or desktop, equipped with Corel Painter IX (updated to latest version, currently 9.1) and a Wacom tablet (Jeremy recommends the Wacom Intuos3 6x8, 6 x 11 or Cintiq 21SX - use coupon code "jeremy" at CoolGraphicStuff for good prices). It is recommended that you have the latest Wacom driver which you can download from their web site. For optimum operation your computer should have the latest version of your computer operating system, either Mac OS X or Windows XP, as much RAM as you can afford and fit into your computer (at least 500 MB recommended), enough free hard drive space to save project files generated during the week (at least 12 GB free hard drive space recommended) and a CD/DVD writer for backing up your files. Please ensure you have installed all software and test run Painter and your tablet prior to class.

Bring with you at least four images, projects, or project ideas, you are interested to work on. These projects could be transforming a photograph into a painting, or painting from scratch, or something more complex such as collage (note that there is a whole week "Collage!" workshop in November, 2006). Prepare photographic images in Photoshop, cropping them and adjusting levels and hue/sat as you see fit. Source images for paintings tend to work better when slightly more saturated and contrasty than you may have for a regular image. Save a flattened version of each image, with a meaningful name, as an RGB TIFF file in a folder for source images. Keep the images at the resolution they came out of your camera. You can always resize them later if needed.

Please bring samples of your own work (digital and non-digital) and marketing materials to share with the class, examples of artistic styles you wish to emulate and inspiring books (make sure your name is clearly written in your books).

Which Resources and Materials?

Whatever level of Painter user you are, you will definitely benefit from joining my new online education center www.PaintboxJ.com. In PaintboxJ you will find new video tutorials on Corel Painter 11 added monthly, and much more. The fastest way I can help you with Painter is for you join one of my in-person workshops. In terms of my instructional books and DVDs, I recommend starting off with my book, Painter X Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook, and introductory DVD, Learning Corel Painter X with Jeremy Sutton. The book is a great complement to all my other materials and also serves as the required text book for all my classes. The book goes deeper and broader than any DVD. It also provides convenient step lists for many of the techniques shared on the DVDs. The Learning Corel Painter X DVD gives you a good overview of the software.

Once you are familiar with the basics then I recommend the more advanced DVD sets, How to Paint from Photographs Using Corel Painter X

and Expanding Your Creativity with Jeremy Sutton - The Art of Collage Portraiture. Both these more advanced DVD sets take you through real-life case studies from beginning to end, sharing my work-flow, organizational systems, creative process, decision-making strategies, techniques and tools, plus including extensive extra brushes, art materials, tutorial images and more. In both DVDs I show how I apply physical paint onto my prints.

The interface has not changed significantly between Painter X and Painter 11 so you can easily apply the lessons from all my earlier materials when using Corel Painter 11. Likewise my PaintboxJ Painter 11 tutorials can all be easily applied in earlier versions of Painter. I do strongly recommend upgrading to Painter 11 if you currently have an earlier version. The newest Painter is the best yet. It is significantly faster than earlier versions and includes a whole new class of wonderful brushes (the Hard Media brushes).

PPA members will earn one merit for attending the san Francisco courses.

Lorraine Headrick, Painter Panache 2002 Alumnus

"Jeremy:
Thanks for letting me preview your latest and greatest Painter IX DVDs.  Having taken you classes in the past I mistakenly thought that the DVDs would be a review.  Much more than being a review, the DVDs are the perfect complement to your classes.  I have been able to re-discover techniques and tips that you went over briefly in your class and have found new ways to apply them. I cannot imagine how much time and effort went into distilling all you teachings into these 4 DVDs. The Painter IX DVD’s should be required viewing for all your students.  The more I watch them, the more I learn.

Thanks again.
John"

"I attended Jeremy Sutton's Painter Panache Intro Class 7-11 Feb 05. My objective for attending the class was to learn both technical and creativity skills which would take me a level beyond my present skills. I recently retired from the U.S. Army which gave me an opportunity to travel and photograph various people and their cultures. I consider myself an advanced amateur photographer and have had my work published in numerous calendars but was not satisfied with my creativity. I wanted to be able to take my existing images and make them works of art which I am delighted to say, Jeremy taught me to do in the class. I have attended other photography workshops in the past but I can honestly say that Jeremy is by far the best instructor. The difference is, he gives personal attention to each student during the duration of the entire course. He is a master digital artist and shares his techniques with his students. After returning from the course, I rolled up my sleeves and have worked on and completed exhibition quality images which I am going to sell in art galleries, calendars, and posters. I would also like to say besides learning the ins and outs of Painter IX, I also gained a lot of insight into myself and my abilities during the duration of the course when we made and critiqued images. If you are planning on taking the Intro Course, I recommend you first purchase Jeremy's most recent training DVD's, Painter IX Simplified and study those prior to attending the class. I worked with my set for approximately two weeks before the class and as a result, obtained so much more information because of my familiarity with the techniques. If you can't attend the class, I recommend you purchase the DVD's and use them to learn Jeremy's painterly techniques. If you are serious about becoming a digital artist, Jeremy is the master instructor!
Regards,
Lowell"
